The BenQ EL2870U monitor is a 28″ 4K HDR monitor made for gamers. More specifically, it’s best used for casual gaming on a PS4 Pro & video enjoyment. There are a lot of 4K monitors in the market but EL2870U sets itself apart from the rest with its HDR compatibility and eye care solution. From what I’ve gathered from research and review tests, this is an affordable monitor you’d want to use in your room when you know you’ll be gaming for hours.
I’ve got to be honest with you, this is my first time handling a 28″ monitor and it’s a lot bigger than I expected. There’s nothing much to say about the box so let’s just dive right in.
You’ll find the following parts in the box:
- 1 x 28″ BenQ Monitor, Monitor Stand & Foot
- 1 x Power Cable & HDMI to HMDI cable
- 1 x CD Containing User Manual, Drivers, & Acrobat Reader
- 1 x Guide Start Guide, Safety Instructions & Online Warranty Card
Setting up the monitor
Based on this guide, it’s an easy setup. Unfortunately, I had a little issue because I couldn’t seem to attach it to the stand. Apparently, you have to tilt the stand to a certain angle (shown below) before pushing it into place. Once it’s in place, simply use a screwdriver to tighten it and secure the monitor to the stand.

EL2870U has a lot of great features but it lacks the ergonomics. You can tilt the screen ~5° to ~15° to suit but cannot adjust its height.
The EL2870U has a 19mm (1.9cm) wide bezel thickness, which is a major improvement from the traditional computer monitors. It’s pretty impressive how BenQ is able to pack all the technology into the EL2870U while maintaining a 19mm bezel thickness. I don’t think the thickness will affect your gaming experience but it does saves a bit of space and easy to mount on the wall.
To be honest, EL2870U has a very minimalistic & simple design. It doesn’t come with any RGB lightings that you typically find on gaming peripherals. The screen has a matte black chassis which I really like as it doesn’t give you that annoying reflective light glare. Also, if you’re wondering, EL2870U comes with dual v2.0 HDMI ports, a v1.4 display port and a single 3.5mm audio headphones jack.
EL2870U can be used for any purpose such as working, watching video, or gaming. However, with its specifications and features, I’d recommend it for casual PC and PS4 gamers. I’ll explain it deeper in the next few portions.
28″ Inch Is The Perfect Size
EL2870U is sized at a comfortable 28″ (approx. 71 cm), which is perfect if you have a whole desk to yourself. I set it up and it’s definitely NOT too big nor too small for my desk. I’m used to a MacBook 15″ screen for work and personally, a 28″ monitor is just too big for me to work on.
However, gaming is a totally different scenario. I love gaming on a bigger screen which makes the EL2870U a great choice for my “mini work breaks” in the office. Whenever I’m tired of writing or working, I’ll just quickly hop onto my PS4 and play a quick match of Black Ops 4. Plus, there are 2 HDMI ports so you can plug in your laptop & PS4 to the monitor to make the switch even faster!
Fast Refresh Rate & AMD FreeSync™
EL2870U has a refresh rate of 60Hz which is not impressive if you were to compare with high-end gaming monitors with 120Hz or more. Which is why I mention that EL2870U is best for PS4 because their games are running at a maximum of 60Hz.
Don’t worry about not having the fastest refresh rate… 60Hz refresh rate is good enough to ensure a smooth gameplay. Also, EL2870U is equipped with AMD FreeSync™ technology. So, you won’t witness any image tearing, broken frames or choppy gameplay.
4K UHD Resolution
4K UHD is a norm in a lot of monitors. For those who aren’t sure what 4K resolution is, don’t worry. I’ll explain.
A typical HD display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is pretty decent but there are emerging game developers, filmmakers and Netflix that are creating more 4K footage. 4K resolution sits at 3840 x 2160 and offers a clearer and more detailed visual.
But like I’ve mentioned, nowadays, a 4K UHD is monitor is common. So, what sets EL2870U apart from the rest is its’ HDR compatibility.
HDR technology helps to enhance the brightness and contrast of the videos, giving it a more vivid and realistic feel. EL2870U uses HDR 10 as per the HDR standard, which helps increase the luminance to 1,000 nits. Our eyes perceive objects in real life at 20,000 nits. 1,000 might seem a little low, for now, but it is a major difference as compared to 100 nits in standard HD. These might sound very technical and confusing for those who aren’t interested.
For those who don’t care about the nits and how HDR works… just remember… the key takeaway is HDR makes moving pictures more realistic as compared to standard HD!
EL2870U has an HDR hotkey on the bottom right for you to easily switch between the 4 HDR & blue intelligence+ settings.
If your video/game is not shot as an HDR content, the EL2870U will still display emulated HDR images by turning on the HDR mode through the button
Eye Care Solution
When you’re picking out a (gaming, leisure, entertainment, work) monitor, it is important to look for one with an eye care solution. Why? You’re probably going to spend more than 2 hours staring at the screen. Hence, having a certified eye-friendly monitor like EL2860U can help to reduce tiredness and eye strains.
Brightness Intelligence+ Technology
Brightness Intelligence+ technology automatically adjusts your on-screen brightness and colour temperature to give you the most viewing comfort and helps to prevent eye strain. When you squint your eyes in order to look at a dim screen for a long time, you’re causing your eyes to work much harder than it needs to. So, this technology protects your eyes and reduce eye strain caused by poor/excess lighting.
There’s a light sensor that detects ambient light levels & colour temperature of your environment. EL2870U then automatically adjusts the on-screen brightness and colour temperature to give you the best viewing experience. It also gradually adjusts brightness based on one’s usage time.
4 Low Blue Light Mode
Light consists of different colours ranging from red, yellow, green & blue. Blue light is one of the visible lights that allows us to perceive the right colours, be more alert, and improves memory.
So, it sounds like blue light is good BUT it also has consequences. Too much blue light reduces the production of our sleep hormone, Melatonin, making it harder for us to fall asleep at night. That’s why you’re advised to put away all mobile devices a few hours before going to bed in order to get a good night sleep. Blue light also increases the risk of macular degeneration and digital eye strain.
EL2870U is equipped with 4 blue light modes to suit your viewing purpose. The low blue light feature helps to filter out harmful blue light so that you get to protect your eyes, reduce eye fatigue and sleep better after a whole day in front of your monitor.
I love the low blue light modes but I dislike that EL2870U doesn’t come with a remote controller. So, it’s a little annoying to fumble with the buttons in order to switch modes.
According to BenQ’s official website, the EL2870U is flicker-free and that helps reduce eye fatigue. I’ve tried other monitors as well in comparison to the EL2870U to see just how flicker-free it is. My findings are quite disappointing because all the monitors I currently have don’t show any signs of flickering. So, I can’t give you an honest review on how much it affects my viewing experience.
I’m not entirely impressed by the flicker-free feature on EL2870U but that’s because most monitors in today’s time and day don’t flicker. However, if your home only has those old-school, traditional TV and you have no other monitor around, then having the EL2870U for the flicker-free feature will positively improve your gaming experience.
We are showing you the different places you can get it from so that you can decide which is a better option for you. For example, if you’re in Singapore and decide to purchase from Amazon, you will need to pay for international shipping and handling charges. However, if you’re located in the US or Europe, buying from Amazon would be the convenient alternative. If you don’t like buying from online stores, you can head over to their official website HERE to locate BenQ’s nearest outlet.
Why should one buy
Now, you know the features and how it fairs during the review. Is it something you should get? It depends.
Casual Gaming & Leisure Use
Like I’ve mentioned, EL2870U has a 60Hz refresh rate. It’s pretty common for an LCD monitor. However, avid PC gamers would use something that has 120Hz or 144Hz. 60Hz is simply too low for professional gaming. With that said, if you’re using it for PS4 or any other console game, then EL2870U is good enough.
With its cinematic HDR, 4 blue light mode, and smart focus, the EL2870U is also great for leisure use. If you’re looking for a great monitor to watch movies and play cinematic games, this monitor can provide one of the best viewing experience. It doesn’t have 100% sRGB or perfect colour reproduction for intensive video editing but EL2870U has a 4K resolution and is HDR compatible, making colours more vibrant and realistic.
Great For Your Room
I’m not sure about you but my room isn’t that big. I don’t have additional space for a 55″ inch TV so this 28″ monitor fits on my desk. And like I’ve said above, 28″ is great for gaming. You wouldn’t want something smaller or you won’t get the same gaming satisfaction.
If space isn’t an issue, getting a smart 55″ Smart TV is more worthwhile. With a Smart TV, you get a remote control, WI-FI, LAN, web surfing and many more. And if you have money to burn, you can even find a 4K TV with HDR.
However, if you’re simply using it for gaming or just need a separate monitor for work, I’d say EL2870U is the better alternative. Think about it… it’s smaller and might be cheaper than a TV.
Or if you’re looking for something even smaller, why not check out the 12″ or 17″ G-Story Monitor?

Affordable For Its Kind
EL2870U is considered an affordable budget 4K HDR monitor.
You’re probably thinking, “there are other cheaper 4K monitors”. And you’re right!
There are a number of 4K monitors that are priced lower than EL2870U but it does not support HDR, have Blue Intelligience+ and low light modes all in one monitor. If you manage to find one that is cheaper, do email me at email@example.com with the brand, model & price. I’d love to check it out.
